DRV8825: motor vibration

Im using DRV8825 with fast decay and 32u step, with @$V, 0.4Nm stepper motor.Motor vibration noticed even in 32 ustepping, previouly i used DRV8711 gate driver IC, motor is running very fine in that driver.

    Thank you for your enquiry. Assuming you were comparing the same motor under the same operating conditions and experiencing motor vibration only with the DRV8825 we need to look into the decay mode settings of the DRV8825. Unlike the DRV8711 that has auto mixed decay capability the DRV8825 has only slow, fast and a fixed mixed decay capability which may not offer ideal current decay matching for the operating conditions of the motor in your application.

    Our newer integrated stepper drivers such as the DRV8434, DRV8461 and DRV8462 products family feature integrated Smart Tune decay modes that is a step up automatic decay mode compared to the DRV8711 auto mixed decay. Smart Tune decay modes further minimize audible noise from the stepper and allows the motor to run smoothly. 

    For the driver circuit using the DRV8825 in your application, if you haven't tried mixed decay mode yet, you could try this and see which one of the decay modes is offering the smoothest motor operation. If you have further questions could you please provide a capture of the motor phase currents while the motor is running with the target speed at the decay mode used?

    Because you may have tried out all the available knobs with the DRV8825 our options may be limited to none to reduce motor vibration with the DRV8825. It is all about matching the mixed decay ratio with the target current setting to achieve proper current regulation (minimum current waveform distortion). Also would be best to reduce the amount of fast decay as much as possible to achieve proper target current regulation. So changing the target current value +/- 10 to 20% and the supply voltage may be of help if your system can tolerate such changes. You can experiment with this, especially reducing the full scale current might benefit vibration. My recommendation would be to consider stepper drivers with smart tune instead of the DRV8825. Such as DRV8426, DRV8434, DRV8461, DRV8452/62.
