Recommend EVM for BLDC and SRM motors

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8343-Q1, DRV8301-69M-KIT, LVBLDCMTR, TMDSCNCD28027F, TMDSCNCD28069MISO, MOTORWARE, CONTROLSUITE

Hi,

Good Day.

Which evaluation board would be suitable to drive BLDC and SRM motors?

For sensorless operation? DC input.

For low voltage, eg. 24V and up to 15A.

Please advise. Thank you very much.

Best Regards,

Ray Vincent

  • Hi Ray,

Thank you for posting to the Motor Driver's forum!

The DRV8343-Q1 device should be sufficient for your needs. Please see the following App Note for more details: Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) Inverter Design With the DRV8343-Q1

There are 2 EVMs available for evaluation of this device, a SPI variant and a Hardware variant with both supporting up to 20A with a voltage range from 6V to 60V:

  • Hi Alicia,

Good Day. Please see below the response of our customer to your reply.

Please let me know which BLDC Motor Drive board (6V to 60V, up to 20A, Sensorless BLDC motor drive with 3phase shunt current feedback) can be integrated with which LAUNCHXL board? and which has the required INSTASPIN FOC and INSTASPIN Motion required, plus I need the BLDC motor along with the recommended kit.

I am looking for a complete kit solution consisting of Motor+ Control Board+ Drive board. During my search came across2 kits. DRV8301-69M-KIT and DRV8312-C2-KIT. Not sure if there is any other kit. The question is among this kit which is the suitable kit to drive both the FOC and MOTION algorithms on the BLDC motor.

I was digging up the solution myself primarily for the BLDC Motor development kit. The voltage range seems fine up to 60Volts, my need is up to 48volts max (typically 24volt is fine), but I need up to 20Amps support. seems DRV8301-69M-KIT seems feasible. Can you confirm if this supports InstaspinFOC and InstaspinMOTION?

From the literature, it seems DRV8312-C2-KIT can support only up to 3.5A continuous and hence ruled out.
Is there any other complete set/kit which can serve the purpose?

    Best Regards,

    Ray Vincent

  • Hi Ray,

If the customer's primary goal is to be able to purchase a complete evaluation kit (Motor+ Control Board+ Drive board), then the only one that is suitable for the customer's voltage/current requirements would be the DRV8301-69M-KIT (please note that that it does not appear that this kit comes with a motor, so the customer would need to get one separately) which does support INSTASPIN FOC and INSTASPIN Motion.

  • Hi Alicia,

    Good Day.

Thanks for your reply that DRV8301-69M-KIT is suitable for my application & LVBLDCMTR does not come with it.
    Few more clarifications:
    1) Do I need TMDXCNCD28054MISO (sold separately) - what is its purpose?
    2) Do I need TMDSCNCD28027F + External Emulator (sold separately )- Hope the emulator is already inbuilt into the kit.
    3) After working with LVBLDCMTR, if I replace it with any 3phase motor does the kit measures motor parameters and still work? (as per TI Design Resources)
    4) Does TMDSCNCD28069MISO comes with License for MathWorks Embedded Target Support?
    5) Does the above MISO comes with License for Powersim PSIM F2806x Target?
    6) Can the DRV8301-69M-KIT drive the BLDC in sensorless trapezoidal control?
    7) Does the eval board contain 3-phase current shunt feedback?
    8) Is there another board DRV8312-69M-KIT?
    9) Does the software GUI oscilloscope sufficient which comes along with this kit?

    Best Regards,

    Ray Vincent

  • Hi Ray,

As these questions are more related to C2000, I am going to re-assign this to the C2000 team.

  • 1) Do I need TMDXCNCD28054MISO (sold separately) - what is its purpose?

No if you have TMDSCNCD28069MISO. It's the similar as TMDSCNCD28069MISO with another C2000 MCU, F28054M.

    2) Do I need TMDSCNCD28027F + External Emulator (sold separately )- Hope the emulator is already inbuilt into the kit.

    No as above.

    3) After working with LVBLDCMTR, if I replace it with any 3phase motor does the kit measures motor parameters and still work? (as per TI Design Resources)

Yes, only for 3-phase PMSM or ACIM. You can identify the motor parameters by using the related InstaSPIN-FOC lab in the motorWare.

    4) Does TMDSCNCD28069MISO comes with License for MathWorks Embedded Target Support?

No. You need to purchase the software license from MathWorks.

    5) Does the above MISO comes with License for Powersim PSIM F2806x Target?

    No as above.

    6) Can the DRV8301-69M-KIT drive the BLDC in sensorless trapezoidal control?

Yes by running the different example with sensorless trapezoidal control in controlSUITE.

    7) Does the eval board contain 3-phase current shunt feedback?

Yes, the DRV8301-69M-KIT has 3-phase current sensing with shunt resistor on the board.

    8) Is there another board DRV8312-69M-KIT?

Yes.  The DRV8312-69M-KIT uses another DRV device that integrates FET and gate drivers for a low current motor. You can find more details about this board in its user's guide on ti.com

) Does the software GUI oscilloscope sufficient which comes along with this kit?

It's a guide to control the motor for demo. You can find more details about the GUI in its user's guide in MotorWare.
