DRV8662: circuit to drive a dental scaler piezo motor?

Part Number: DRV8662
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV2700

I was looking at using DRV8662 or similar chip for this application, but the chip appears to be for audio applications up to 20 KHz, whereas the piezo motor operates at 28KHz. Is there a suitable alternative?

  • Hi Carl,

Unfortunately our piezo drivers are audio specific and won't support 28kHz with a meaningful drive voltage. If you look at the DRV2700 datasheet you'll find gain bandwidth curves at different loads and PVDD voltages which you can extrapolate to 28kHz (these curves are generally applicable to the other DRV piezo drivers) but the curve drops off pretty quickly around 20kHz and I doubt you'll get the output drive you're looking for.

    Apologies for the inconvenience,
    Jeff McPherson
