DRV8910-Q1: current capability and parallel operation

Part Number: DRV8910-Q1

Hi Expert,

Some questions would like to check with you.

1. Are there any requirements for which ground of half-bridge can be parallel together to support higher current? For example, any two or three or four or ten of 12 half-bridges can be paralleled together?

Customer have some concerns that the paralleled channel(channel 1 & 2 as example) cannot be enabled at the same time, it will cause OCP in one channel.

0x08 Register is used to enable/disable the HS or LS switch. 0x08 for HB 1~4, 0x09 for HB 5~8, 0x0A for HB 9~12. Does it mean only the HB in same register group can be paralleled together?

2. May you kindly share thermal test report for DRV89xx-Q1 in PWN mode or continuous mode? I would like to know the max continuous output current capability for single channel and parallel mode under 85C Ta condition. The datasheet say ‘6-A maximum current for paralleled outputs’, does it for continuous output under 25C condition?

Thanks!

  • Hi Ethan,

You can parallel multiple half-bridges but only in set of pairs as described in section 8.3.1.1.3.

0x08 Register is used to enable/disable the HS or LS switch. 0x08 for HB 1~4, 0x09 for HB 5~8, 0x0A for HB 9~12. Does it mean only the HB in same register group can be paralleled together?

The table below from the datasheet explains

The thermal data you are requesting depends heavily on your board layout. However, you can estimate the temperature rise using the equation from section 9.3 of the datasheets. The RDSon will have to be adjusted depending on the total number of half-bridges paralleled.

  • Hi Pablo,

    Sorry, I didn't get you.

You can parallel multiple half-bridges but only in set of pairs as described in section 8.3.1.1.3.

From my understanding, the table 5 from section 8.3.1.1.3 is just a example for parallel operation. Do you mean only group of HB 1~3 or HB 4~6 can be paralleled together? Then, which means the max paralleled channel quantity is 3, correct?

    Thanks!

  • Hi Chuqiang,

Let me correct my previous statement. You can parallel any channels together. Not just in groups like I previously mentioned. So you can have any combination or paralleled outputs. However, keep in mind that the maximum current is 6-A peak. Paralleling more channels will not allow you to driver higher that 6-A.
