Since the DRV8461 and DRV8462 are drop-in compatible, would firmware developed for one of them work for the other?

Hello,

Yes this is correct. The Registers programming is compatible. This is how EVM firmware is implemented. The only difference would be the IFS value vs. VREF input voltage scaling. This value is published in the datasheet.
