DRV8801-Q1: Different between high side brake mode and low side brake mode

Part Number: DRV8801-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8801

Dear TI Team,

For the brake mode of DC motor, it is usually use lowside.
In the DRV8801 datasheet , it can be set to highside or lowside. Refer to ③ and ④ in the figure below.
We want to know the impact of this two modes for the user, as well as  advantages and disadvantages.

Regards

  • Hello,

Low-side is more common in our portfolio of motor drives.  Either mode will work identically to slowly decay current in the load.  There is no advantage or disadvantage for the DRV8801.

In the DRV8801, the Rdson of the high-side FETs is the same as low-side FETs, so power dissipation is the same.  In some devices that use PMOS for high-side, the resistance is higher on the high-side recirculation path.  For a device with PMOS high-side FETs, the low-side slow decay method would have an advantage.

    Regards,

    Ryan
