DRV8145-Q1: Parallel Operation with current trip

Part Number: DRV8145-Q1

Hey Team,

I'm trying to apply 4 DRV8145 in parallel operation but the current trip function does not function properly because one of the IC's keeps going into OCP mode and closes entirely at current trip, so the other one keeps getting stuck in the current trip mode since the other one is turned off and limits the whole current. How can I operate this IC with parallel operation?

  • Hey Baris,

The DRV8145 is not designed for connecting multiple of them in parallel. The internal timings for shoot through (dead time) and on of off timings won't be exactly synchronized. You could mitigate this issue by connecting series inductors at each output and then connect them in parallel. The inputs can be connected together. Be sure those trace lines are equal in length and size. See below output inductor example. This is for a different device, but the idea would be the same. It appears the current distribution across devices were not balanced. In addition to the inductor you may need some milliohms series resistors for load balancing. You can search for connecting power MOSFETs in parallel. If these mitigates the issue for you you'd be able to connect them in parallel. Else you may have to consider gate drivers such as the DRV8701-Q1, DRV8707-Q1 with external power MOSFETs. Thanks.
