MCF8316A: MCF8316A vs MCF8316C

Tool/software:

I have the eval board running my motor at 70k rpm with no problem. When I transfer these same settings to my custom board the motor spins up but it stops and resets around 55k rpm.

The eval board uses PN: MCF8316C and my custom board uses MCF8316A.

I have confirmed that power is not the root cause of the issue as I am able to run the eval board using the voltage regulators off my custom board without issue. 

I have monitored phase current and VM during the reset / failure event on an oscope. VM does not dip or overshoot (18V +/- 1V). The phase current on the other hand spikes right before the reset / failure occurs. I am not getting a HW_LOCK_LIMIT fault in the GUI through this event but perhaps the driver chip is self protecting without tripping the fault. DVDD does not get used. AVDD stays steady throughout the failure just like VM.

I cannot see any obvious issues myself and would appreciate some guidance in resolving.

    Did you test this with I2C mode on your custom board? How is speed is controlled?

    Hope there is no analog signal difference on the speed pin.

    I looked at first JSON, as per that Resistance of motor is 225mOhm, Inductance is 6uH, BEMF is 6mV. Can you confirm how you measured these parameter, let us first confirm the parameters entered are proper.

    The current limits in Open loop is 8A? Do you need so much of current?

    How much current are you seeing on a phase when at max speed/load?

    I am suspecting thermal shutdown event, please share the motor parameter and ratings.

    Can you try to cool the board and check if it can run ?

    Schematics look fine.

    One thing I want to check if on MCF8316C there is MIN_ON_TIME configuration in GD_CONFIG1, what is the value set? From the JSON you shared earlier shows 0us, we should actually set "Automatic based on the slew rate".

    On MCF8316A minimum on time is 1us and it is not configurable because of this minimum on time for PWM is 1uS we may not be seeing full duty, in order to check if this min on time issue we can configure as 1us on MCF8316C and check what is the maximum speed we can achieve?

    Can you try to probe phase current to measure what is peak value of phase current which motor is drawing? This is to check if an thermal shutdowns or something else.

  • Hello, I attempted running the eval board (MCF8316C) with a 1us min_on_time and it did not seem to change the performance. Still seeing full speed on the eval board (MCF8316C) and max of 80% speed on custom board (MCF8316A) before it gets stuck in a reset loop.

    Since it is getting stuck in reset loop (please confirm how you are seeing reset) it may be some different issue which we need to test by isolating.

  • It has the ALIGN_BRAKE capability? I know the MCF8316C has this feature listed in the datasheet but is not implemented / possible with the IC / GUI. Just want to make sure I understand your response correctly.

  • Thanks, I do see it in the datasheet.

    However, I also see it in the datasheet for MCF8316A and MCF8316C. When I tried to implement I was told this feature wasn't ready for production yet and was a test only feature. I could not use this feature from the GUI and was told this was by design. That is why I want to confirm that this new part indeed has the feature ready for production use. Thanks!
