DRV8711: Inquiry about DRV8711 Control Options.

Part Number: DRV8711
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8452, DRV8434, DRV8462

Tool/software:

Dear TI Support Team,

I would like to inquire if the DRV8711 can be operated using only PWM and GPIO signals, without requiring SPI communication. Our application involves a device that lacks SPI capability and can only provide PWM and GPIO control.

I noticed that the datasheet mentions some configurable options, but it is unclear whether the DRV8711 can be controlled solely through PWM and GPIO. Could you kindly confirm if this is feasible?

Thank you in advance for your support. I look forward to your response.

  • Hi Tom,

The DRV8711 requires SPI communication to set the ENBL bit to 1b to enable outputs. The default state is 0b disabled. That said we have hardware control options with integrated stepper drivers with on chip H-bridges such as the DRV8462, DRV8452, DRV8434 etc. The DRV8462 can support up to 65 V operation with 5 A full-scale in DDW package and 10 A full-scale in DDV package. Thank you.

  • Hi Murugavel,

    Thank you for your reply.

Does this mean that if my control interface only supports PWM and GPIO, it is not recommended to use the DRV8711?

This is correct. Unless you write to the SPI register to make ENBL bit to 1b the outputs will not be available. You cannot use this device without SPI communication. Thanks.
