DRV8306: Motor driver controller selection

Part Number: DRV8306
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC27710

Tool/software:

Hello team ,

Please suggest me a suitable solution for driving the motor with the below details. Below mentioned Motor is used for Solar water pump

Motor Power 3HP

Motor Voltage 160V

Motor Frequency 110

Based on the above motor details can I assume it is PMSM motor

  • Hello,

Thank you for your question! Can I confirm that the motor voltage is 160V, not 60V? What is the expected RMS current? What is the expected peak current? What DC voltage do you intend to use to drive the motor?

    Regards,

    Anthony Lodi

  • Hello Antony

I have attached the motor details below

Can I confirm that the motor voltage is 160V, not 60V? - Yes it is 160V

What is the expected RMS current? -  Considering the below motor datasheet and I max as 15A . Irms=Ipeak/sqrt(2)= 9.1 A

What is the expected peak current?  13A

What DC voltage do you intend to use to drive the motor? from the below data sheet, I am assuming it should be 160V,-  please refer the below motor datasheet and correct me If I am wrong.

for the below motor details please suggest me suitable driver IC

  • Hi Darshan,

Thanks for your response, I will reassign this to the appropriate group to help provide the best recommendation for parts.

  • Hey Darshan,

I am the applications engineer supporting non-isolated gate drivers. It appears that our motor drivers do not currently support up to 160V. I would suggest a discrete solution that would use a gate driver with discrete MOSFETs. The gate driver for this application would be the UCC27710 which is a 600V rated half-bridge driver that is often used in motor drive applications.

Let me know if there are further questions.

    Thank you,

    William Moore
