DRV2700EVM-HV500: Maximum Current Rating

I am driving a piezo actuator  HD-PAF1419 on 212 using DRV2700EVM-HV500. I wan to know what maximum current amplifier can produce whike operating on 212V. According to graph between maximum output voltage and load current in section 6.1, if we are driving the piezo actuator at approximately 212 V, the maximum output current appears to be around 5 mA. Am I interpreting right? I wanted to confirm maximum current deliver by amplifier on 212V. Also, is there any experiemnt that I acan perform to measure it.

  • Hi,

    That current rating sounds correct. This part is capable of ~1W of output power, which aligns with the 212V*0.005A. As you increase the load further, you will see the boost voltage droop and eventually collapse. Or the part may thermally shutdown - but I think this is less likely in the HV500 setup. 

    I'm unsure if you need exactly 212Vpp, but the DRV2700 alone can provide 200Vpp without the flyback configuration - cheaper setup. Let us know if you have more questions.

I just want to make sure that the current rating provided by  DRV2700EVM-HV500 remains in safe ranges. I am thinking about attaching some variable load to the output and measuring the maximum current supplied by device. Do you have any idea what load I can attach to perform this test?

  • Interesting application! Yes, it is tricky dealing with high voltage and haptics. I think for your test, you can use a variable resistor in the appropriate range for the voltage you are driving.. So if the peak is ~105V, look for something in the 40kΩ to 10kΩ range (2.5mA to 10mA). Power will be low still <1W rating needed.
