High current when power on DRV8332

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8332

Hi.

I have DRV8332 mounted on our board. When powering on DRV8332 by 30V, the current is very high and not stable. Sometimes it reaches 1A. After several seconds, the current drops to zero. Do you have any idea to debug this issue?

Another question is the capacitor layout for VDD and GVDD_B. In our board, C19 (VDD) and C22 (GVDD_B) are shared with the wild plane for GVDD. Is this kind of layout reliable?

Thanks for advice.

  • Jordda,

If you have multiple boards, I recommend checking if the high current issue occurs on multiple or only 1.  Also, see if it occurs on a board that doesn't have the DRV8332 soldered (such as the board in the picture).  And I would also measure the powered-off resistance from power to GND, as well as powered-off capacitance.  Also, check if there's a different result by keeping the 3 RESET pins low (if they're not already).

    I don't see a problem with the C19 and C22 power planes.

    Best regards,

  • Jordda,

I am confused as it looks like you have layed out the board with an exposed region to solder the powerpad to....but, the DRV8332 thermal pad is on the TOP of the package and needs to be mounted to an external heatsink.

You can see an example of this by looking at the DRV8432EVM.

  • Hi Ryan,

Originally this board will be applied to other chip. Now I just directly use it for DRV8332. Do you have any comment for this exposure area for DRV8332?

    Thanks!
