Looking for a true trapezoidal brushless dc motor

Hi

I am a graduate student who are using 28335 for motor control application.

My question isn't about DSP, but about finding a brushless dc (bldc) motor with trapezoidal back-EMF. All the motors that I own and I have been looking online are not "TRUE" bldc motor, because they have sinusoidal back-EMF.

Even the bldc offered from estore.ti.com (HVBLDCMTR) does not seem to be a true bldc with trapezoidal back-EMF. I say this because the motor part number is Anaheim Automation BLWS235D-160V-3000, and when i sent Anaheim Automation an email to verify whether the motor has trapezoidal back-EMF, they said it has sinusoidal back-EMF.

Can anyone show me where i can purchase a true bldc motor with trapezoidal back-EMF?

Thank you very much for your assistance.

  • Hi Seungryul,

Finding a true trapezoidal motor is definitely not easy, I believe they are more costly to manufacture and thus more rare. Let me notify someone on our C2000 motor team that might have a better lead for you.

  • Hi Nicholas,

thanks for a quick reply. The bldc motor doesn't have to have an exactly trapezoidal back-EMF. As long as it resembles trapezoidal shape, it would be fine. Although it would better, if it has fairly good trapezoidal shape.

    Thanks again

  • As Nick said, this is tough. I don't know of an off the shelf motor that has a true Trapezoidal Bemf.  Nearly all are sinusoidal as it's just easier to wind the stator in this fashion.

If you have access to any of the following you may be able to find one:

CPAP or other low cost medical blower motor

BLDC power tools (though these are more often than not still semi-sinusoidal)

    starter/generator

higher end traction motors (though still most of these are semi-sinusoidal)

  • Hi Chris,

    Thanks for the reply.

I understand that it is hard to find a "true" bldc. But do you know any off the shelf motor that has semi-sinusoidal back-EMF? My requirement is that more the back-EMF deviate from sinusoidal, better it is.

    All the motor that i find have pretty good sinusoidal back-EMF ^^;;;

Thank you in advance for your help.

    Moon.

PS. the power rating for the motor can be any where between 50~500W.

  • You may want to contact someone like Anaheim Automation or Moog Motors and see if they have a recommendation for a true trapezoidal Bemf motor.

I have over 50 motors in my office and not one of them has a true trapezoidal Bemf...
