DRV8307 chip blowing up

I have built a couple hundred board and once in a while I have a chip smoke and not sure what is causing it. and it happens after its been running for a while.

it looks to be by the power sense pin. has anyone else had this happen?

  • Hi Eric,

The typical reason for this is a voltage spike exceeding the absolute ratings, which damages the device.

What is your power supply voltage (VM)? What current is running through the motor? What value bulk capacitor are you using? Does the issue appear during a specific event, like brake or coast?

Have you looked for spikes on the VM pin with respect to the gnd pin of the device? This can provide valuable information.
  • The Power Supply Voltage (VM) is 24V,
The current max is about 10 amps
The Bulk Cap is 2000uf 35V
    not sure when its happening.
  • Hi Eric,

Thanks for the information. Please let us know what the VM voltage with respect to ground at the device pin is.

If you have scope captures of the voltage as the device is running, it would be very helpful. If you can, set the scope to capture the voltage spikes.
