Motor Drive IC Selection

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8302, DRV8832, DRV8312, DRV8303, DRV8301, DRV8332, DRV8313, DRV8307, DRV8308

Hi Team,

The customer needs to select  the motor drive IC for BLDC. He need two types motor drive ICs. One has the Integrated MOS and another does not have the Integrated MOS.  And the motor voltage is 48V.  The two type  motor drive ICs can achieve the closed-loop control for the position, speed and current of the motor.

Please recommend the suitable ICs.  Are DRV8832 and DRV8302 OK?

Can DRV8303 replace DRV8302? Can DRV8312 replace DRV8832?

Thanks,

Best Regards,

  • Hello Mickey Zhang,

The DRV8832 device is recommended for BDC motors. Depending on end of application DRV8302 can be used as gate driver device (current 1.7A). For Integrated

Can DRV8303 replace DRV8302? it could again, depending on what customer wants. The main difference between these two devices is that  the DRV8302 has an integrated buck converter where as the DRV8303 has SPI interface capabilities.

Can DRV8312 replace DRV8832? No, the DRV8832 device is recommended for BDC motors where as the DRV8312 is meant for BLDC motors.

For pre-driver ICs, please check at the DRV8301, DRV8302, and DRV8303 devices.

For Integrated drivers, please check at the DRV8312, DRV8313, and DRV8332.

I hope this helps. Thank you.

  • Hi Luis,
Thanks for your reply. You said the DRV8832 device is recommended for BDC motors. And the customer needs the device for BLDC motors.
So, DRV8832 is not suitable, right?
  • Mickey Zhang,

That is correct DRV8832 is not suitable. Thank you

  • Hi Luis.
    OK.
Q1: For pre-driver ICs, there are DRV8301, DRV8302, and DRV8303 devices. For Integrated drivers, there are the DRV8312, DRV8313.
The customer need pre-driver IC and Integrated driver IC Integrated driver to achieve the closed-loop control for the position, speed and current of the motor. Are these pre-driver ICs and Integrated driver ICs OK?

Q2:Can DRV8307 and DRV8308 achieve the closed-loop control for the position, speed and current of the motor?
  • Hi Mickey,

From the devices you mentioned DRV8308 has the integrated closed loop. However, max. voltage is 32V. You mentioned application intended to be 48V.

The devices I mentioned do not have integrated closed loop control, however they can be used in such a way to feedback to a MCU and then implement a closed loop with some coding. The DRV8301 for example, the SO1 and SO2 pins can be used as input to the microcontroller.

I hope this helps. I will send you an email with another possible option. Thanks.
