DRV8880: AutoTune Feature for 5 A Stepper Motor

Part Number: DRV8880
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8711

Hi,

I want to use the AutoTune feature of DRV8880 with a stepper motor with 5 A current(RMS). Is it possible to use external MOSFETs driver with DRV8880 for use with higher stepper motor currents as the internal driver is limited to a maximum current of 2 A ?

Also is it possible to set the micro stepping to 1/256 instead of 1/16th, in firmware just like DRV8711 ?

As per my understanding, DRV8711 does not have the AutoTune feature which is available in DRV8880. How can I get both features, AutoTune and 256 microsteps, for 5 A stepper motor drive ?

Please advice.

Best Regards.

  • Hi Rushikesh,

The DRV8711 is the closest match to your stated goals, but does not have AutoTune.

The DRV8711 can control external MOSFETs and can be set to 1/256 microstepping. The DRV8711 can be tuned to each application. A tuning guide is available for this device.

The DRV8880 cannot control external MOSFETS, nor can it be set to 1/256 microstepping.
  • Hi Rick,

    Thanks for prompt reply.

Once manually tuned during installation, do I need to retune the stepper motor to account for the aging of motor(and other variations in system over a period of time) or is it that it(the aging and time factor) will not make a big difference as far as avoiding the resonance effect of the motor is concerned ?
