DRV10970EVM: Clarification needed on connecting the Hall sensors

Part Number: DRV10970EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV10970

Hello,

I'm confused about how to connect the Hall sensors to the DRV10970EVM from my 3 phase brushless motor. The motor has 5 wires for the Hall sensors - Vcc, GND, and one to each of the Hall sensors. Reading the documentation, that seems like it's logic level or IC control, but I'm not clear on jumper settings and resistors to add to the EVM board. Can you steer me in the right direction?

Thanks!

  • OK, I have a semi-successful set up! I say 'semi-successful' because the motor phases and hall connection do not match the motor manufacturer wiring, and because I have 2 speeds - slow and a little bit faster, or about 500 and 1000 RPM. If anyone has a picture or hand drawing of a 3 phase BLDC with hall sensors in IC mode (5 wires), I would greatly appreciate you posting it!
    Thanks in advance.
  • Hello Brian,

There are a few different types of Hall sensor configurations (e.g. Serial, Parallel, or just separate Hall elements). The schematics for hooking the Hall sensors up to our device can be found in the Hall Sensor Configuration and Connections section in the datasheet (9.1.1 currently). Once you figure out the configurations the sensors are in, cross reference the pins and schematic with the Terminal block connection in the DRV10970EVM User's Guide.

In addition, you will need to figure out the which sensors should correspond to the U, V, and W inputs. This can be found later in the same section with a series of tips and steps.

If you get stuck, please refer to the step you got stuck on.

    Best,

    -Cole

  • Thank you Cole. Unfortunately, I don't see a section 9.1.1 in the user guide, simply section 9.  This section has this to say:

"Since Hall signals are inverted, configure the DRV10970 as shown in Figure 10. Inputs from the Hall IC is connected to internal comparator, so Hall input and reference VINT/2 signals connection to DRV10970 needs to be switched. So now output of Hall IC needs to be connected to x_HN and reference needs to be connected to x_HP (x represents phases U, V and W)."

But in section 5, the instructions are: "Populate R17, R18, and R19 with a user-selected pull-up resistor for the Hall-sensor IC with open-drain output. R22 (currently 0 Ω) is a current-limiting resistor for Hall-element sensors and is configurable to the application".

Then in section 8 the instructions seem to agree with section 5: "Configure the DRV10970 EVM for use with HALL ICs by populating jumpers for J5, J7, and J8 and resistors R19, R18, and R17 with appropriate values for HALL ICs with open drain as shown in Figure 6."

These two sections seem to conflict with section 9. I've configured the jumpers and added 10k resistors per section 5.

What I'm looking for is a final, non-cryptic, view of how to configure the board for a 3 phase BLDC sensored motor with 3 hall sensors and 5 wires (Vcc, Gnd, Ha, Hb, Hc). I would greatly appreciate the help!

  • Hey Brian,

I meant datasheet for section 9.1.1 not user's guide. Sorry if I said the incorrect document.

If you have 5 wires (3 halls, GND, and VCC like you said), this should correspond non-differential hall sensors which is shown in this figure. This figure was in section 9.1.1 along with the text I previously mentioned.

Since the U,V, and W "HN" connections are connected to VINT/2, you should be able to cover J5, J7, and J8 to connect them to VINT/2. This should help you narrow your search in the user's guide for this configuration.

    Thanks,

    -Cole
