DRV10963: Recommended BLDC for DRV10963 driver and stirrer application.

Part Number: DRV10963

Hello everyone,

1. I want to use a Brushless 5V for a stirrer application and i want to use this driver : DRV10963. I tried to drive a quadricopter BLDC with it (rated 12V). I know that it's not rated for it but i just wanted to see the motor moving. I'm just trying to understand why it didn't move. Is it because the inductor is lower than it's recommended in the DRV10963 datasheet? When i start the drive with the BLDC plugged, I see a 1V between phase and GND but nothing else. When i unplug my BLDC, voltage between phase and GND look normal (i have a PWM 0-5V).

2. Does anyone know a brushless motor i could use with this drive? I power the drive with a lipo battery (4.2V max) and use a booster to go up to 5V. I do not boost up to 12V because all my system work with a 5V maximum voltage. That why i would like to use a 5V driver, because my application is low power (<1W).

Thanks you.

  • Amaury,

Can you provide a scope plot of the voltage of the 3 phases when you start the motor? Also, can you get the current in phase U? It's possible that the inductance is too low or if the resistance is low it could be hitting a current limit.

    Thanks,
    Brian
  • Hello Brian,

Yes it's what i'm thinking, but i would like to know what BLDC 5V can i drive with this drive? I tried to find a part on internet, that i can easely source for my product. DO you have part that you could recommend? I can find many 12V brushless but not 5V.

    thanks you

  • Amaury,

I don't have a good source for 5V BLDC motors. Most of the ones we work with are given to us directly from our customers. I do know that the spindle motor in laptop hard disc drives are 5V sensorless BLDC motors. If you can find an old laptop hard drive that might be a good source.

    Thanks,
    Brian
