Upgrading from L293 chip

Hi,

I am newbie to motor control and I have been tasked to upgrade from a L293B Chip to a PWM chip controlled by a micro.

Looking at the datasheet the L293B is a Push-Pull Four Channel Drivers 1A per channel.

What PWM 1A TI chip would you recommend to replace the L293B.

All help/ input and tutorials gladly accepted.

Hi,

The motor is brushed DC. I was thinking of maybe this chip DRV8832?

The DRV8832 is a good device, but it only has two outputs. The L293B has four. The DRV8833 is similar to the DRV8832, but has 4 outputs. The DRV8833 has higher Rdson, but is lower-priced. From there, any of our brushed DC drivers with integrated FETs and independent half-bridge control should work for you. The differences in our products will be types of current sense, Rdson, logic inputs, and other features.

One of my coworkers pointed out that the L293B can accomodate voltages up to 36 V. The DRV8833 can only go up to 10.8 V. If you need voltages as high as 36 V, you may also want to consider the DRV8841, DRV8843, and DRV8844

Hi James,

Thanks you for your replies. I have a couple of additional questions:

1) Looking at the DRV8832 datasheet this chip incorporates the PWM and H-Bridge internally, therefore the output connects directly onto the motor without any additional electronic components?

2) At a later date if I wanted to make the motor variable speed, would you recommend I select a chip with no internal PWM and control the PWM via an external micro. What motor chip would you recommend for this application.

1) Correct - the H-bridge FETs in the DRV8833 are internal. All you need to do is connect the motor to the OUTx pins.

2) Most of our other devices in the "Brushed DC Drivers with FETS" family allow for PWM control of the H-bridge. One of these devices may work for you: DRV8841, DRV8843, and DRV8844.

Hi James,

Thanks again for your input.

One last question, so the DRV8841, DRV8843, and DRV8844 chips the motor speed is controlled by PWM. I have also seen the DRV8830 chip in the search, is this controlled by I2C commands?

Yes, you use I2C to control the DRV8830. Section 7.6 in the datasheet shows the register settings. You control the speed by changing VSET.
