DRV8840EVM: USB communication is not available, and LED does not blink

Part Number: DRV8840EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8840

Hi,

I am trying to evaluate DRV8840EVM, but it does not work.

I set up the USB connection and GUI software but the USB communication is not available.

MSP430 status LED does not blink, and XIN/XOUT keeps DC voltage (0V/1.6V).

3.3V LED is turning on and I have checked the VDD voltage ok.

I am wondering if there is any problem on MSP430 or 8MHz crystal but I am not sure.

Please advise me what I should do.

Shuhei

  • Hello,

That may be caused by our computer upgrade to window 10 which is later than DRV8840 GUI development time.

The USB driver of DRV8840EVM GUI (Software: CPG005 - DRV88xx EVM (Rev. B) is v2.10.00 version. Please try the following steps:
    1. Download and install latest USB port driver (2.12.28 version) from www.ftdichip.com/.../D2XX.htm .
    2. Connect the EVM and open the “device manager” and find that EVM connection port. Right click that COMx port and select “properties”.
    3. In “properties” “driver” page, set the port compatible with “window 7”.

Please let me know if you still have the issue.
  • Hello Wang,
I tried the latest USB driver(2.12.28), but the issue still remains.

The status LED does not blink. I suppose while USB cable being connected, VDD(3.3V) is delivered to MSP430 and LED blinking, is this correct?

    Regards,
    Shuhei
  • Shuhei,

The LED seems right. Do you try "In “properties” “driver” page, set the port compatible with “window 7”?

On my side, I would check our GUI release plan to see if we have a new GUI for DRV8840EVM which could fix the window 10 issue.
  • Hello Wang,

I don't find the check box related to Windows compatibility in FDTI USB driver properties.

I have checked the follwing tree:
    Device Manager
      + Ports (COM & LPT)
          + USB Serial Port (COM2)
              + Port Settings
                 + Advanced Settings

Is there the check box is the tree?

For CPG004-5_DRV88xxEVM_R1p1.exe, I have defined the Windows Xp-sp3 compatibility in its properties.
I have tried this about Windows 7 also.

    Regards,

    Shuhei

  • Hi Wang,
I pushed MCU-RST button to reset MSP430, but Status LED does not turn on and not blink.
As I mentioned before, MSP430's XIN and XOUT stay constant voltage, not oscillating.

I asked TI local customer support about this, he also suspects the MSP430 defect.

We need to check the DRV8840 performance immediately. Is there any good way to solve this issue?

    Best Regards,
    Shuhei
  • Shuhei,

The issue could be caused by the compatibility of window 10 as other GUIs. We are going to release new GUIs to resolve this issue. I will let you know when the new GUI is available.
BTW, we have updated DRV884x GUI. We will put DRV8840 as the next one.
  • Hello Wang,

    Thank for your help.
I have found out old Windows 7 PC, and tried the latest FIDT USB driver, but the situation does not change.

When you release the new GUI which makes USB connection available, please let me know.

    Regatds,
    Shuhei
  • Shuhei,

We are working on the GUI update. My mindset is on the GUI update.

" The status LED does not blink. I suppose while USB cable being connected, VDD(3.3V) is delivered to MSP430 and LED blinking, is this correct?" You are right. The LED should blink. I just verified on an EVM: the Status LED should blink and 3.3V LED should be on.

Would you try to get another board to test it again?
  • Shuhei,

    Does the new EVM work?
BTW, the new GUI can be found in www.ti.com/.../slvc342
