DRV8301: DRV8301-HC-EVM Rev D kit_drv8301_SN3,SP3

Part Number: DRV8301
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CONTROLSUITE

I have a DRV8301-HC-EVM Rev D kit.

drv8301 has SN1, SP1, SN2, SP2.

Q1. But why is three shunt register?

Q2. Is there a reason that SN3, SP3 of drv8301 don't need

  • Kwan,

Do you have the board schematic?

It's found in the ControlSUITE software under:
Development Tools>Motor>Three Phase BLDC and PMSM Motor Kit with DRV830x and Piccolo MCU> Documentation>
    Hardware Development Package>DRV830x_RevD_HWDevPKG>Schematic.

In that schematic you can see that the first two current sense resistors are connected directly to the two current shunt inputs on the DRV8301. The third current shunt does not connect to the DRV8301.

In parallel all three current shunt resistors connect to the external current shunt amplifiers on the board. All three resistors also connect to a summing op-amp which is used to measure the total motor current through all the phases.

  • I have a DRV8301-HC-EVM Rev D kit schematic.

While I was studying, I asked a question because I was curious.

I know that the third current shunt does not connect to the DRV8301.

The DRV8301 and  Shunt register are only connected by SN1, SP1, SN2, SP2.

Q1. Why does kit's circuit use External Current Sense Amplifiers and DRV8301 Current sense amplifiers?

Q2. Could I only use the External Current Sense Amplifiers without DRV8301 Current sense amplifiers?

    I don't know why DRV8301 SN1, SP1, SN2, SP2 pin are used.

  • Mr Lee,
The choice of which amplifier and how many amplifier used is based on the software algorithm that you plan to use.

Ans1 ) The third amplifier is required by the software. Please refer to www.ti.com/.../spruhi9a.pdf for more information on the tradeoffs between how many shunts used.

Ans 2 ) Yes, DRV8301 can be used without DRV8301 current sense amplifers.
Please refer to e2e.ti.com/.../the-unused-op-amp-what-to-do for the circuit considerations.
