DRV3245Q-Q1: Can DRV3245-Q1 be used to BLAC?

Part Number: DRV3245Q-Q1

Dear team,

As you know, TI has DRV3245-Q1 as BLDC device. Can we use this device into BLAC application?

As far as I know BLDC is controlled by trapezoidal signal and BLAC(=PMSM=PMAC) is controlled by sinusoidal signal.

So BLDC needs three half-bridge (= 6 switching MOSFET) to make 6 step control. But I am not sure what BLAC(=PMSM=PMAC) needs.

What BLAC(=PMSM=PMAC) need in its external side and DRV3245-Q1 also can be used in BLAC application?

Thank you.

Regards,

Oliver Kim

  • Hi Oliver,

The difference between driving BLDC and BLAC/PMSM/PMAC motors is mostly in the commutation pattern. Like you mentioned, a BLDC motor uses 6-step trapezoidal commutation, while a BLAC motor uses a sinusoidal signal.

However, from a hardware perspective, the same three half-bridge inverter can be used to drive both types of motor. Because the only difference is in the commutation pattern, there shouldn't be any issues using the DRV3245Q-Q1 to drive a BLAC motor.

    Thanks,
    Garrett
