DRV8837: Sinusoidal output current?

Part Number: DRV8837
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8847, DRV8850

Is it possible to achieve a sinusoidal o/p current from the DRV8837 by modulating the PWM drive?  Or would another device be more suitable (5V Vcc, 1.8A pk)?

Regards

Jim

  • Hi Jim,

Yes, it possible. But the DRV8837 may not be the best device depending on the application.

Can you provide more details on your application?

    What load are you driving?
What is your desired PWM frequency?
What features of the DRV8837 are desired?
    Any other information?

  • Hi Rick

    See below:

What load are you driving? DC Motor

What peak current do you require? 1.2 A peak, 0.9A RMS

What is your desired PWM frequency? 1kHz

What features of the DRV8837 are desired? Sleep Mode

    Any other information? Limited space

    Thanks

    Jim

  • Hi Jim,

Thank you for the additional information.

Assuming the DC motor is brushed, the following devices are also possible options:

    The DRV8847 which has:

     A voltage range of 2.7 to 18V
Ability to monitor the current by adding an opamp on the external sense resistor
RDSon of ~500mOhm in parallel (higher than the DRV8837)

    The DRV8850 which has:

A voltage range of 2 to 5.5V ( 7V abs max -- this could be an issue)
    RDSon of 65mOhm
Ability to monitor the current using the VPROPI output
An integrated adjustable LDO that can provide up to 100mA
