DRV110A-Q1: Maximum external FET gate charge

Part Number: DRV110A-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TIDA-01621, DRV110

How do I calculate the max acceptable gate charge of the external FET? In TIDU584A (section 4.2.2.6) the recommendation is that the gate charge should be less than 10 nC. However TIDA-01621 use MOSFET SI7414DN-T1-E3 with 26nC max total gate charge. If a MOSFET with even larger gate charge is required, would you recommend using an external low side gate driver?

  • Hi Erik,

FET selection depends on the system current Tr/Tf requirements.

The typ DRV110 gate drive current is +/-15mA when Vin=15V, at lower Vin DRV 110 will have lower drivability.

A FET with gate charge <=10nC is safe solution, depending on the application FET with gate charge greater than 10nC may work.

This is the case for TIDA-01621, 26nC is good enough for that application.
