DRV8353RS-EVM: DRV8353: Gate Driver Fault (GDF)

Part Number: DRV8353RS-EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8353

Hello,

I was running a BLDC 6354 for a while, through successful Motor Identification and multiple startup cycles.
Suddenly after changing the Speed Reference via GUI, I got a GDF Fault and the Fault LED lit up. This fault can be cleared, but upon startup, it immediately trips, and the controller goes Offline.

I was using the default gate drive settings, and almost stock configuration besides having 7 pole pairs, running at 25V, and drawing around 300-600mA.

Is there anything I can do to debug this, or does it seem like I fried the gate driver and I should look to replace the on-board DRV8353?

Thanks for the help,
Jeff

  • Adding to this I verified on the scope that GLA, GLB, GLC were all low, and GHA, GHB, GHC were all high (VM).
MOTA, MOTB, MOTC are all at VM aswell.

  • Jeff,

Thanks for posting on the MD forum!

Does the fault LED come on as soon as the DRV ENABLE line goes high?

    Regards,

    -Adam

  • Adam,

Yeah, right as I click Start Motor it would immediately go into fault.

I just got it working again after doing some measurements with my meter and a power cycle, but I'm not sure what got it out of the GDF mode to allow the motor to identify and run again. I'm worried that if I continue to end up in this mode I'm risking breaking the gate driver. Could this possibly be related to long motor phase cables (16")?

Besides the GDF error, I do have a few other general questions:

    1. When starting the motor I have RsRecalc, Offset Calc and Force Angle all turned ON, the Fault LED momentarily flashes then turns off through normal startup. I think this is normal?
    2. After the motor is Identified, is it typical to turn off the RsRecalc/OffsetCalc/ForceAngle for faster startup?
    3. For the EVM Hardware should I be worried about back EMF of stopping the motor from high speed (4k rpm on 190KV motor)?

    Thanks for the support!
    Jeff

  • Jeff,

    1. I have seen this in the past, no concern here.

    2. Yes some of our customers do this.

    3. Yes this can be a concern, if possible reduce the PWM to slow the motor. This can be done quite fast but it really helps instead of just hard shutting off the motor.

  • Thanks for the support Adam!

I haven't been stuck in the FAULT state since enabling all the features at startup/identification.

Last question -- Is it possible to reverse the motor direction through the GUI?

(It seems to me like the micro is programmed for 6xPWM and you can only reverse using 1xPWM mode)

  • Jeff,

Yes you can reverse the motor direction by using a negative speed reference value in the GUI.
