LMD18200: TVS Diode

Part Number: LMD18200

Hi Team,

In the Supply Bypassing section at page 10 of the datasheet of LMD18200, the recommended TVS diode is P6KE62A having a minimum and maximum breakdown voltage of 58.9V and 65.1V respectively while the maximum supply voltage of LMD18200 is 60V.

A customer is concerned that a transient voltage above 60V may pass thru the diode when the breakdown voltage is at the higher limit of 65.1V. Would you recommend P6KE56A with minimum and maximum breakdown voltage of 53.2V and 58.8V respectively? If not, can you suggest a better alternative?

Regards,

Danilo

  • Hi Danilo,

This device has been available for 20+ years, and the recommendation has not changed. For that reason, I would stick with it.

I think the value may have been selected to cover the max operating voltage of 55V, as suggesting a lower value with a 55V max operating voltage would have led to additional questions.

If the customer is using a lower system voltage, the TVS voltage can be lowered by a similar amount.

Also, in the same section please notice the following:

Note that when driving high load currents a greater amount of supply bypass capacitance (in general at least 100 μF per Amp of load current) is required to absorb the recirculating currents of the inductive loads.

  • Hi Rick,

    Thank you for the clarification.

    Regards,

    Danilo
