DRV8323R: Device power and ground scheme

Part Number: DRV8323R

Hi,

I am designing with DRV8323RS.

It is not 100% clear from the data sheet, so I want to make sure.

1) internal regulator
What is the purpose of the internal regulator and DVDD on pin 36?

Is it there because it needs an external Cap?

Is it intended to use as the power supply for the internal amplifier? should be connected as input to VREF at pin 26?

2) Ground scheme

PGND should be used for all things power drive? Gate drivers ...

AGND should be used for current sensing?

BGND should be used as GND for the BUCK converter?

DGND? What is connected to DGND?

Thanks!

  • Hey Nir,

    1) The purpose of the DVDD regulator is simply to step down VM to a lower voltage in order to supply voltage to external circuitry that support low current. The digital core that runs the gate drive architecture and other important digital logic do not use the DVDD rail directly. The output of the regulator does require a cap routing back to AGND.

    2) PGND is for VM (charge pump, high-side gate drivers, low-side gate drivers)

AGND is the digital GND for internal small voltages.

BGND is for the buck regulator.

DGND is mainly used for the CSA. The GND loop here is small to isolate the CSA measurement from other noise sources as best as possible.

Note all the grounds in the DRV8323R are internally connected.

    Regards,
    Paul

  • Thanks for the fast replay!

It's a bit confusing, so I want to make sure:

AGND is used as digital GND.

DGND is used for the analog current sense amplifier?

  • Hey Nir,

Yes that is correct. AGND is used for small voltage digital signals and DGND is used for the analog current sense amplifier.

Also just to clarify my last note, some of the grounds are connect internally but current is not expected to flow within the part between GNDs. All grounds should be connected externally.

    Regards,

    Paul

  • Thanks a lot!

"All grounds should be connected externally" That is obvious :-)
