DRV8701EVM: Mods to run at 42 Volts? (on 36 volt fully-charged batteries)

Part Number: DRV8701EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CSD18540Q5B, DRV8701

Looks like the CSD18540Q5B and DRV8701ERGER can take 42 volts.  I would increase R23 for some headroom on the Vbat monitor.  What else do I need to consider to adapt this design to 36V lithium batteries?  Also, if I am only going to run the motor in one direction, can anything be omitted/simplified?

  • Hi Chris,

If you are planning to use the 36V lithium battery as the input power source (VM), there is no need for hardware modification. You can use the GUI to adjust the change the current regulation limit value.

If you are running the motor unidirectionally (one direction) only, you can set-up the driver in a half-bridge operation. Half-bridge operation is described in section 7.3.2 of the DRV8701 datasheet. In this operation, only two FETs are used and the spinning direction is set by connecting one of the terminals of the motor to SH2 and the other terminal to either GND or VM.

I hope this answers your question.
