Recommend sensorless motor driver kit

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BOOSTXL-DRV8323RS, LAUNCHXL-F28069M, TIDA-00916, BOOSTXL-DRV8305EVM, TIDA-010031, DRV8353RS-EVM

Hello, support team.

Please recommend me a kit to use for sensorless BLDC test and future product development.

The example of the motor to be used is the ECX19L of Maxon.

Please recommend me a product that has no problem in operating the specifications such as the solution you have or the development kit above.

It would be best if it is a full component with BLDC Driver (including inverter), MCU, and FW.

In case of MCU, I hope it can be controlled by UART or CAN communication.

Then I'll be waiting for your reply. Thank you.

  • Hello Jaewoong,

Do you intend to operate this motor at 18V, 24V, 36V, or 48V?

This looks to be a 1 pole pair motor with a maximum speed of 100,000 rpm (1.7 kHz).

TIDA-00916 (LAUNCHXL-F28069M & BOOSTXL-DRV8305EVM) is tested up to 1.2kHz with sensorless FOC. This solution is available for 18V or 24V operation and can be "upgraded" to support 36V operation using the BOOSTXL-DRV8323RS instead of the BOOSTXL-DRV8305EVM.

We have an example reference design using sensorless trapezoidal control which is not available for purchase, however you can download the board design files & firmware: TIDA-010031. This design is tested up to 100,000 rpm.

For 48V applications, we have kits that can support the motor but no specific firmware is provided for this high speed operation: DRV8353RS-EVM

    Thanks,

    Matt

  • Hello, Matt.

We are going to drive the motor 18V or 24V.

And the target motor maximum speed is 40,000 rpm.

Not only speed but also torque is very important.

The concept of the product we want to develop is as follows.
    - Low speed: less than 100 rpm, high torque
    - High speed: up to 40,000 rpm, low torque

If it's high speed, I think TIDA-00916, which you recommended, will be enough.
But I'm wondering if it's possible to drive in a low speed high torque mode. (We haven't checked the required current yet.)

And for the kit you recommended, I wonder if it's only for testing or if it's okay to apply it to the product that develops circuits, internal devices, and F/W.

Apart from the kit, please recommend a motor driver and driver EV-Kit that can be used and varies with low speed high torque and high speed rotation.

    Thank you.

  • Hello Jaewoong,

Normally low-speed performance is very difficult to do with sensorless techniques. This is because at low speed there is not much back-EMF to measure the rotor position. However InstSPIN which is featured in this design does have very good low-speed performance for a sensorless algorithm.
