DRV8353: Recommending testing protocol

Part Number: DRV8353

I'm looking for advice on the testing protocol for the DRV8353. Aside from checking power rails and FET gate performance, what are the most recommended signals to watch to avoid damage to the part? What common red flags should we be looking for on those signals?

So far, I'm checking for overshoot or ringing on the gate transitions and making sure there is no noise on the input voltage rails. What else would you suggest?

Thank you!

  • Hi Alcor,

We recommend testing all of GHx, SHx, GLx, SPx, and SNx voltages on an oscilloscope during operation with maximum load of the motor. Look for spikes in the 50-500ns range to ensure that the abs max ratings are not being violated on these pins when switching. Remember that there are four cases of operation:

    1. Current going OUT OF SHx, output switching from high to low
    2. Current going OUT OF SHx, output switching from low to high
    3. Current going INTO SHx, output switching from high to low
    4. Current going INTO SHx, output switching from low to high

Other important signals are the regulators to look at during motor operation:

    • DVDD - we do not often see this regulator get damaged, it is good to check to make sure there is not excessive ripple
    • VGLS - make sure that it is stable and not getting "pumped up"
    • VCP - make sure that it is stable and not showing excessive ripple

Another common test is the "all stop" test in which you induce a latching fault or shut down. In this case all motor energy is recirculated into the supply and you can check if your supply can handle the recirculated energy, Confirm that VDRAIN stays below the abs max rating.

    Thanks,

    Matt
