Problems Using DRV8833

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8833, DRV8833EVM

Dear All,

I have been having some trouble with the DRV8833. Everything seemed to be going well on the first revision of our board, where we used a MSP430 to send PWM signals to the motor driver chip. We used a circuit configuration very similar to the DRV8833EVM. We tested it on a few DC motors without problem.

On the second revision of the board, we changed the layout, but did not change the connectivity. Despite this, the chip seems to fault every time the external supply voltage passes 3.0 V. The processor is running on 3.3 V and the motor has an external supply, separate from that of the processor. The chip will correctly fault when undervoltage less than 2.6 V. Also, it seems to fault before drawing any significant current to output to the motor and before it receives any PWM signals.

We have checked as many of the connections as we can think of, and there do not seem to be any shorts on the board. Do you have any suggestions as to what the problem might be?

Thanks very much for any assistance you might offer.

Sincerely,

JK

  • James,

    Couple of questions:

    1)  Do you have a pull-up resistor on the nFAULT line?

    2)  Is the nFAULT staying low and you have to cycle RESET to clear it or does the chip recover if you continue to increase the voltage on VM?

    3)  Do you have a load connected?

    4)  Is the chip hot to the touch....careful here?

    5)  How many ICs have you tested?
