DRV8031-HC-EMV rev D / DRV8308-HC-EVM rev D

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8301

Cannot drive motor. Can connect to board and everything appears normal. Followed the procedures without problem. Program loaded, etc. No pulses are making their way to pin 1 of any of the MOSFETs, but everything else appears normal. Is it possible the the driver chip is broken?

  • Hi Jason,

While possible that the driver chip is damaged, let's check a few other signals to confirm it is good.  If you have not done so, please locate the schematics for the board. They can be found using post: http://e2e.ti.com/support/applications/motor_drivers/f/38/p/351439/1231712.aspx#1231712

Once the board is powered up and set to run the motor, please check the DRV8301 signals (page 3 of the schematics). Many of these signals are available on the J5 header (page 5). Please be careful when probing the signals.

EN_GATE              should be high when driving the motor
    LED6                      should be unlit
    PWM_xH                should be toggling
    PWM_xL                 should be toggling

If any of these signal are incorrect (there may be others as well), the DRV8301will not drive the motor

  • Thanks for the quick response. The EN_GATE does not appear to be asserted. I checked both sides of R12 and they are both low.

    Suggestions?

  • Hi Jason,

    A few more questions:

    1) Is this a new board? If not, please check with the prior user to make sure it still works.
    2) What code did you load? I don't have a lot of experience with the GUI, but is it possible to send a EN_GATE signal to the EVM and confirm the DRV8301 responds to it (look at GVDD cap C14, it should rise to >10V). If GVDD does not respond, the device may be damaged.

  • RIck,

The software on the stick didn't match the board I had. I found another version in one of the sub-folders and it worked.

Nothing is wrong with the hardware.

Why doesn't the USB stick match the board? The schematics, drawings, software, etc. are for a different EVM board (8312). Makes set up harder than it has to be.

    Thanks for the help.

    Jason

  • Jason,

Glad to hear you have it working.

I will check into why the USB stick didn't match the board, and get back to you.

In the future, if you have questions regarding the software or GUI you can post to microcontrollers/c2000. The experts on InstaSPIN code reside there.
