Team,

I have 2 heatsinks with integrated blowers on the board and want to control the fans with the simplest fan controller.

It should:

1) run completely on its own (also using fan tacho)

2) have the possibility to use i2c / smbus

3 ) if possible dual in order to control 2 fans individually

Which device do you recommend?

Can you provide the motor model number?
What is the current and voltage requirements?
Are these motors brushed or bldc?

Rick,

The blower is a Delta BFB0512HHA - please note that I might probably need one with tacho. This is not clear yet.

So if the device can handle both that would be nice.

Voltage is 5V or 12Volt ( preferred is 12V)

It should be a brushless blower.

Assuming this is a sensorless application, please look at the DRV11873 or DRV10975. Both may work, although the DRV10975 may require tuning

Please confirm there are no internal electronics in this module with the manufacturer.

many thanks for your prompt reply.

One more question on my side:

- DRV11873 can control the motor speed through either the PWM or Vcc pin. Now, given a 12V power supply on the Vcc pin, I anyway need an external PWM so microcontroller to control the motor speed, right? If so, this is going to be a roadblock as there's no microcontroller on board.

Same story holds true for the DRV10975, correct?

Hi Bo345,

DRV10975 can control speed using PWM input or Analog input or using I2C communication. How are you planning to input speed command ?

Hi Krushal,

since customer might not have a microcontroller on the board I would exclude either the I2C or the PWM to control the speed and configure the device at power-on.

That said, the only available option is the Analog input control but looking at the datasheet it seems that the SpdCtrlMd bit in the SysOpt9 register has to be set to 0 to configure the SPEED pin as Analog input and this anyway requires an active I2C communication unless we can program the EEPROM in advance for them.

How do you feel about that?

Hi Bo345,

Customer might have to configure most of register setting based on motor, so not only this bit, other settings will also change.

There is production tool available for customer to program device prior to assembly.
