DRV110EVM: solenoid not open/energized

Part Number: DRV110EVM

My settings are: JP1, JP2, JP3  closed , JP4 thru JP9 are open.

Potentiometer R4, R5, R6  Fully CCW,   R3  fully CW.

12 VDC supply are connected to P1-1 and P1-3

Solenoid coil is connected to P1-2 & P1-4

I verified that the solenoid energizing when providing 12V to it directly.

  • Can someone help me please. TIA

  • Hello Tony,

It is possible that the currents chosen by the potentiometers are too small to energize the solenoid. Can you please send me the datasheet for your solenoid? If you don't have that information, can you please send me the solenoid resistance?

Alternatively, you can use the formulas in the datasheet to choose the resistances to set your potentiometers.

Sometimes when I'm not sure what current to use, I will turn the supply on and off while turning the PEAK potentiometer slowly until I hear the solenoid click. Then I do the same thing with the HOLD potentiometer until I see that the solenoid remains pulled in while it is energized.
  • I tried with two diffent solenoids, one with 3.5 ohm and the other at 18 ohm. Both operate/clicked when I feed 12V directly to it.
Do you see anything wrong with my connection? 12V+ is connected to P1-1 and 12V- to P1-3. Do I need Vin or Vlimit connection?
  • Tony,

I don't think there is anything wrong with your connection. However, since you are using 12 V, you can try shorting JP6 and JP8 connectors to connect the 12-V supply directly to VIN.

The problem is likely that the EVM is not configured for the current you require. Magnetic force is dependent on current. If there is not enough current, the magnetic force will be too weak to overcome the spring force. The potentiometers and sense resistor need to be set for the currents you require.

From my calculations, to operate your solenoids, you may need to reduce the size of your sense resistor. For the 18-Ohm solenoid, you could probably use a 0.33-Ohm resistor. The 3.5-Ohm solenoid may need a 0.1-Ohm resistor.

The formulas are in the datasheet, but here is the link to an Excel calculator to help you determine the values:
