DRV8304: Question about bidirectional and unidirectional current sense operation.

Part Number: DRV8304

Hi,

could someone explain me what is the diffirent between uni and bidirectional sense operation and in which application make sense to use the this two operations?

King regards,

Nikos

  • Hi Nikolaoas,

Thank you for posting to the MD forum!

The main difference between bidirectional and unidirectional sensing is whether the VREF is biased at VREF/2 (bidirectional current sensing) or VREF (unidirectional current sensing).

Typically, many customers use bidirectional current sensing because of two things:

    1) They want to determine how much current is being pulled from GND during PWM switching, braking, or coasting. This will result in negative currents through the sense resistors that wouldn't be detected in unidirectional mode.

    2) They are using a sinusoidal PWM profile to drive sinusoidal current through the motor.
