DRV8711: Power supply isolation

Part Number: DRV8711
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ISO7741

Hi team,

The DRV8711 transfers detailed settings by SPI.
Until now, we have traditionally used a photo coupler for isolation in the case of stepping drivers. (STEP/DIR/ENBLE/ERR etc. signal pins).
In the case of SPI, there is no switching of signal direction, but when connecting with a general-purpose photocoupler, it goes up to about 10 kbps.
When using this DRV8711, is there no problem if the signal lines such as SPI and STEP/DIR are directly connected to the CPU board without isolation?

Beat Regards,
Tom Liu

  • Hi Tom,

There is no problem with respect to the DRV8711 if the ground of the digital and DRV8711 is connected.

If the ground of the digital and DRV8711 is separated, this could lead to incorrect evaluation of the signals.

If the customer would like isolation, there are products like the ISO7741 with much higher speeds.
