DRV8711EVM: large current draw

I hooked up a new DRV8711EVM and ran it in forward and reverse a few times.   After it was sitting idle for a minute or so I noticed a large current draw - approximately 10 amps and  I shut off the power supply.   I smelled something and felt the chips on the board.   Some of the output mosfets were hot.   The motor was the motor supplied in the EVM.   Voltage was 24 volts.   Power supply is a variable supply up to 35 volts and 20 amps.   What would have caused the large current draw?

    After you shut off the power supply and wait for the EVM cool down, does the DRV8711EVM recover?

    What is IDRIVEP setting? Would you set a 200mA IDRIVEP current?

    Would you check the winding current and xISENP waveform with a scope and share the scope picture? So, we can check the large current going into the winding or going through the high side and low side FETs?

  • I turned the power supply down to it's minimum voltage (about 5 volts) and turned it on.   The current was immediately 10 amps.

  • IDRIVEP is set to 200 ma.  I do not have a scope immediately available.   Since the current is high upon turn on, would you like to disconnect the motor and see if the current is high?

    It is hard to debug without a scope picture. Yes. Please disconnect the motor and see if the current is high?

    I would think the EVM has been damaged. When you have a new board and a scope, we can resume the debugging.

  • According to Art Mecina, I can return the board for replacement if it was purchased within 90 days.   I purchased the board from Digi-key on Jun 19, 2020.  The following is from Art. 

    I visited your post and saw that the expert mentioned that the EVM has been damaged. If the board was bought within 90-days, it should still be under warranty. Kindly confirm with the expert if the board can be returned for replacement. If he did confirmed, you can reached-out to support center again and specify that you want a replacement and provide them your e2e posted link.

    I replied "I would think the EVM has been damaged." So, if you can return the board for replacement, go ahead to do it. I don't have any info about digi-key's purchase agreement.
