DRV8837: Motor Protection

Part Number: DRV8837

Hello,

Is it required to connect a varistor or birectional TVS diode in parallel to motor for protection against high voltage spikes? or does the IC provides protection against inductor current?

  • Hi Jain,

The DRV8837 includes over-current protection. If the output current is above 1.9A for longer than the deglitch time of 1µs, the H-bridge FETs will be disabled protecting both the driver and the motor. If you wish to further protect against sudden voltage spikes, you can add a varistor or TVS diode.
