Part Number: DRV8837
Hello,
I am performing low-side current measurement for the motor fault detection. As shown in the attached image, in left side I was using transistor for motor bridge and 0.1 Ohm resistor for motor current failure detection.
But i want to replace my motor bridge with IC DRV8837. Can I connect in DRV8837 a 0.1 Ohm resistor from GND? as shown on right side in image?
OR is there any other method wherein I can test motor failure?
Thanks in advance
Hi Jain,
Yes. You can replace the discrete H-bridge circuit with the DRV8837 like you show on the right picture. However, you need to make sure you put enough copper around the thermal pad of the DRV8837 for good thermal dissipation.

So in this case, do I have to connect 0.1 Ohm resistor only to pin 4 and thermal pad pin 9 directly to GND? or both pin 4 & 9 to 0.1R resistor?
In reply to Jain Priyank Jagadish:
You can connect the 0.1Ω sense resistor to pin 4 and the thermal pad and board GND to pin 9. This way, the thermal pad can be connected to the larger GND plane on the board for better thermal performance.
