DRV8313: Minimum output current

Part Number: DRV8313

Hi Team,

A customer wants to use the DRV8313 to drive a BLDC with 10mA RMS current. The test condition in Section 6.5 Electrical Characteristics of the datasheet shows the output low current is 5mA. What is the minimum output current limit of this device?

Regards,

Danilo

  • Hello Danilo,

The 5mA max specification refers to the VM operating supply current. This is not to be confused with the output current that can be delivered to the phases of the motor. VM operating supply current can also be called the quiescent current of the device. Essentially is the amount of current that is taken up by the digital core, protection analog circuits etc.

So there is no minimum current the device can supply. The device does not use current sensing to commutate, it simply waits for the states of INx pins to change. All intelligence about the motor phase current applied to the motor is handled externally. There is a comparator integrated but the output is expected to be taken elsewhere that uses the control, for example, an MCU.

  • Hi Cole,

    Thank you for the clarification.
