Hi,

I'm trying to find a small motor driver IC for micro brushless motors such as:

I thought that DRV10866 could work out nicely with this tiny motors so i purchased the EVAL module. Connecting the three motors cables to A, B, C (tested all positions), I obtain this behaviour (doesn't really matter how the potenciometer is):

Any idea why is this happening? Any other IC suggestion for these motors?

Hi Victor,

The DRV10x parts are generally designed for fan applications (lower speed, higher inductance). The motors you posted are high performance RC motors, that are a whole other breed of motors (not quite that "tiny").

Those motors appear to draw over 2A which exceeds the current rating of this driver.

I would look into our DRV8301, DRV8312 drivers and TI InstaSPIN-FOC if you are looking to design your own control board.

What is your application?

Hi Victor,

The motor you are using does not have a 4th terminal, which is required for proper operation of the DRV10866. To work around this, you must create an artificial common.

The application note below works for the DRV10866 as well.

Nick's points that the motor exceeds the current rating of the device is still valid. So even after creating the artificial common, the motor may not start or it may shut down at higher speeds.

Hi Nicholas,

Thanks for your anwers. I'm building up a small RC helicopter (4 rotors) powered by a 3.7 Li-Po battery. I checked DRV8301 and DRV8312 solutions and although they might work i believe they are a bit too much for my application

There's also the space issue, i'm looking for a solution that can fit in a 7mmx7mm. DRV8313 could fit however the Vs (Min) is 8 V (i need something that could be powered by a 3.7 LiPo battery).

Do you have this kind of ICs?.

Unfortunately, we do not have an IC that fit the specs you are looking for. The DRV8301, DRV8303, (external FETs) and DRV8313 would be the closest fits.

Here is a quadcopter boosterpack done here at TI for some references. This is by no means an easy project though.
