DRV8332-HT thermal shutdown

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8332-HT, DRV8332

Hello,

I am looking DRV8332-HT datasheet and I don't understand thermal shutdown part :

Overtemperature Protection
The DRV8332 has a two-level temperature-protection
system that asserts an active-low warning signal
OTW) when the device junction temperature exceeds 125°C (nominal) and, if the device junction
temperature exceeds 150°C (nominal), the device is
put into thermal shutdown, resulting in all half-bridge
outputs being set in the high-impedance (Hi-Z) state
and FAULT being asserted low. OTSD is latched in
this case and RESET_A, RESET_B, and RESET_C
must be asserted low to clear the latch.

So the maximum operating junction temperature is 150 deg ?

The thermal shutdown is the same than non HT version ?

Best regards

Maël Guilbaud

  • Hi Maël

You can think that 125C is just a warning to your application system. No real action will be taken of the device outputs between 125C to 150C. But, after the device exceed 150C, all outputs will be shut down.

Theoretically, you can run the device below the thermal shut down temperature. But it is better to have enough margin to get more stable running and longer life time. That is why we put 125C warning here. The -HT version has different package(HTSSOP), thermal data, and current rating, while the non-HT version need a up side heat sink and has higher current rating.

  • Hi Wilson,

    Thanks for your answer.

I still don't understand why the datasheet speaks about 175 deg capability, while the inverter's thermal shutdown is set at 150 deg.

    Yours faithfully

  • Hi Maël

It is true has some confusion here. Let me check with design team. But anyway 150deg is a nominal value, the MAX operation range of DRV8332HT could be 185 deg. And this value is only guaranteed by design not by test.

The recommended way to use the device is that once the OTW asserted, lower the current or pause the operation by MCU as quickly as possible and not wait the temperation rising further.

    Thanks.

  • Hi Wilson,

Did you check with design team ?

I am interested in running this device at 175 deg, but if the thermal shutdown is set at 150 deg it is a bad idea...

I still don't understand why TI speaks about 185 degree if the component stops at 150 deg.

  • Hi Maël

Sorry for the delay. Please refer to the answer below.

Thermal Shutdown is disabled in the DRV8332-HT part.  Thus the section indicating the thermal protection will be removed from the datasheet.

Recommended Operating Junction Temperature is -55C to 175C.

Absolute Max operating junction temperature is -55C to +185C as highlighted on pg. 3 of the datasheet.

We will revise the thermal shutdown description that should only belong to DRV8332 non HT version.

    Thanks.
