DRV8837: The two phase DC motor drive chip for softe -start

Part Number: DRV8837
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8832, DRV8830

hi ,Sir/ woman :

I use the DRV8837 as the two phase motor drive Chip , we have some power  issue on motor start ,  So do we have some similar chip which have the softe-start funiction, thanks !

Jianfeng .

  • Jianfeng,

Most motor drive devices get the driving PWM signal or two phase switch input from MCU. So, the soft-start is controlled by MCU.

So far, I don't see any soft-start function device.

  • Hi,wang:

Thanks for your kindly reply ,  yes , most motor chips have the PWM signal control, but from the datasheet of the DRV8837 ,there just a litter content of the PWM ,   Do  TI  have the two phase motor drive chip which have the detail introduction of the PWM control ,could you recommend some ?

    Thanks !

  • Jianfeng,

BTW, we do have a couple of devices that have soft start built in for single phase DC motor. The DRV8832 (Hardware I/F) and DRV8830 (I2C) slowly ramp the motor to the desired speed without the need of a PWM input. For example: DRV8832's duty cycle slowly ramps up to the commanded voltage. This can take up to 12 ms to go from sleep to 100% duty cycle. Because of this, highspeed PWM signals cannot be applied to the IN1 and IN2 pins.

But, since we talk about two phase motor, I am not sure what "soft-start" do you mean?

    a. the winding current soft-start to setting value

    b. the motor speed soft-start to setting speed

Would you send me your 2 phase motor spec?
