TPS74801: Driving a GSM module with TPS74801

Hello all,

I'm looking to drive a GSM module with TPS74801 at 3.6V. For the most part, the GSM module current would be below 0.6A. During the bursts of transmissions there would be sequences of 600 us repeating after 4.5ms where the current consumption would be 2A. As I read TPS74801 can handle current surges up to 2A. Would such GSM current surges up to 2A be handled by TPS74801?

I just realized that the input voltage of 4.6V as well as bias voltage won't work as I was planning. Assuming a higher bias voltage is available, how would the surge current be handled?

Hi Prithvi,

This part is capable of handling 2A, but it is rated for 1.5A. The Current limit can be triggered at 2A and the output voltage cannot be guaranteed to be in regulation.

The TPS748 is part of a family of parts with similar specifications. The TPS749 is rated for 3A and would be better suited for your design.

Thanks Juliette. So the current limiting is not triggered for 0.5 ms pulses like I mentioned up to, not exceeding 2A? We are considering TPS74801 for the lower price.

Hi Prithvi,

I reached out to a colleague to confirm, the current limit will not be triggered if you source up to 2A of current. However, because the part is only rated for 1.5A, the specs may deviate from the datasheet.
