BQ24721C: Suggestions for Li-Ion SMBUS Battery Charger

Hello,

I am looking for recommendations for a possible Li-Ion battery charger. Our battery pack to be used is a smart battery and complies with SMBUS 1.1. It contains two independent Li-Ion batteries at 12V each. Each Li-ion battery is 4s3p. Each has its own fuel gauge and SMBus signals.

Their maximum charging voltage is 16.5V and maximum charging current is 3.0 A.

We will be using a microcontroller to communicate with the batteries to acquire their state of charge and possibly other info.

Please recommend a battery charge IC that makes charging the smart batteries easy.

Hi Chandler,

Please take a look at the following chargers, depending on which topology you prefer and the adapter voltage in your application. These chargers are all SMBus controlled and can charge 4s batteries.

BQ24725A (buck, traditional architecture)
BQ24735 (buck, hybrid boost architecture)
BQ24770 (buck, NVDC architecture)
BQ25710 (buck-boost, NVDC architecture)
