BQ24725A: Is it possible to use this SMBUS charger with a non-smbus compliant battery?

Part Number: BQ24725A

Hello,

We plan on using the BQ24725A SMBUS charger in a new design with smbus 1.1 compliant Li-Ion batteries.

In the case that a battery is used that is not SMBUS compliant, meaning no SMBClock/SMBData, is it still possible to charge these batteries?

Our design also includes a MCU to monitor some SMBUS battery information on the SDA/SCL lines.

  • Hi Chandler,

Yes, you can use the BQ24725A to charge batteries that do not have an SMBus communication interface. You will just need to make sure that the host MCU configures the BQ24725A's register settings appropriately so that parameters such as the ChargeVoltage() and ChargeCurrent() are within the battery manufacturer's specification.

    Best regards,

    Angelo
