BQ25790: Support of other quick charge standards like Qualcomm, Mediatec etc?

The datasheet of BQ25790 points out, that the IC supports USB power delivery standard and also an auto detection of the attached power supply.

USB PD standard only covers supplies with 5V, 12V and 20V output.

Therefore my question is, what happens when I connect it to a power supply able to deliver 27W max but only 9V maximum (e.g. 5V/3A and 9V/3A) but no 12V output.

Can I use the maximum output power of 9V 3A with the unit, or will I only have 5V availiable, because 9V is non-standard USB PD voltage?

  • Hi Dirk,

    Input current limit detection on D+/D- is only for USB BC 1.2 ports (SCP, CDP, DCP) and certain high voltage DCP adapters that were available when QC2.0 was available.  If not detected, the charger uses the voltage supplied and input current limit register is set to 3A.  The ILIM_HIZ pin resistor divider can be used to clamp input current limit lower if needed.  This charge does not have CCx lines and so cannot detect USB PD sources for use when charging the battery.  The mention of USB PD is for reverse/OTG mode where the charger can provide the USB PD voltages back at its input.  You will need a port controller like TPS25750 in order to detect USB PD power for charging.

    So do I understand you right, that if I only use BQ25790 IC without any additional port controller, I will have the following in- and outputs?

    Input: USB BC 1.2 compatible:  5V , 1.5A max    and

              USB QC 2.0 compatible 5V, 9V, 12V, (20V QC2.0 Rev. B?),  2A max , 18W max

            or if  nothing detected:   5V, 3A max

    So there is no way to get more than 18W input power with this configuration, even when 45W USB PD supply is attached to the USB-C port?

    Output:   USB PD / OTG :    5V, 12V, 20V , 5A max    no support of for example 9V

             

  • Hi Dirk,

    After D+/D- detection, the host can change the input current limit (and disable the ILIM_HIZ pin).  Since the charger does not have CC1/2 lines, a USB PD communication chip or port controller will be necessary in order to increase the USB PD output higher than 5V in charge mode.  In OTG mode, the host can change the charger's OTG output has required.
