TPS564201: How short circuit has been implemented?

Part Number: TPS564201

Hello Team,

One of my customers is exploring to Use TPS564201 for one of the projects (Communication Hub for UK market).

The customer has raised the following query :

There is no mention of short circuit protection in the TPS564201.

Could you explain in detail how it has been implemented in the part ?

Do we have waveforms to share to understand it better and can be shared ?

I could not find any waveforms in the EVM user guide or the datasheet.

Regards,

Harmeet

  • Hi Harmeet,

When the VFB voltage falls below the UVP threshold voltage, the UVP comparator detects it. And then, the device shuts down after the UVP delay time (typically 24 µs) and re-starts after the hiccup time (typically 15.5 ms). This is the operation principle of short circuit protection.

Also, you can find similar waveforms of  output short circuit protection waveform shown below.

    Best regards

    Lucia

  • Thanks Lucia.

Could you elaborate on the  nomenclature of waveforms ?

What Blue ,Green and pink is reprsenting?

Secondly if the output is already short circuited and we turn on the device how will it protect?

Do share the waveforms for this case if you have?

    Regards,

    Harmeet

  • Hi Harmeet,

    1. Yellow represents Vin; Blue represents Vout; Green represents inductor current; Pink represents SW.

    2. Let me check with you, do you mean first hard short vout and then power on IC?

    Best regards

    Lucia

  • Hello Lucia,

Thanks for the elaboration on the nomenclature of waveforms.

For point 2 , Yes I am looking at protection mechanism and the waveforms at first hard shot on Vout and then powering up the IC.

    Please share and explain.

    Regards,

    Harmeet

  • Hi Harmeet,

The protection mechanism is the same when first hard short then power on. You can find similar waveforms of this condition.

    Best regards

    Lucia
