LM3674: operation at low temp range

Part Number: LM3674
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM3671, LM3670

Dear team,

the device is used in multiple designs and so far the -30°C was OK. There is a new request for going down to -40°C. Ideal the customer could reuse an existing design and therefor I wanted to understand what limits the device to -30°C. Other foamily members like LM3670 or LM3671 are specked down to -40°C. Was it simply not characterized a the time or is there a technical reason, like cold start problems? Or is is just not accurate at the low temp?

many thanks

Lutz

  • Hi Lutz,

I would also guess the same. LM3674 is only characterized and tested for a temp ranging from -30°C. I am not sure if I can get more details as this is a very old part. But let me check.

Alternately, you could even consider LM3671 as this is a drop-in replacement for LM3674 with similar features and is characterized from -40°C.

In any case, I recommend to propose newer devices for newer projects. I understand it could be a design reuse, but we have so many better devices in our portfolio now and I recommend to have a look at the new parts.

    Febin

  • Hi Lutz,

I checked internally for further details but got nothing much as this is an acquired part. I am not aware of any cold startup issues with LM3674. So, my recommendation would be to follow the datasheet. If the application requires -40°C, I suggest to go with LM3671.

Please let me know if you have further questions.

    Regards,

    Febin

  • Hi Febin,

thanks for checking, we will go ahead as you suggested.
