TPS53015: TPS53015, TPS53014

Part Number: TPS53015
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS53014

Hi,

I am using TPS53015 Buck regulator in my design. But due to the lack of parts I am planning to replace TPS53015 with the TPS53014 part from TI. While comparing the datasheet the pin 2 of TPS53015 is a power good pin whereas the pin 2 in TPS53014 is a soft start pin.

But the footprint for TPS53014 is same as the footprint of TPS53015.

  1. Is it possible to replace the TPS53015 with TPS53014 or is there any alternate part for TPS53015 ?
  2. I have left the power good pin unconnected in my design for TPS53015. If I replace the part (TPS53015) with TPS53014 then the soft start pin of TPS53014 will be left floating. In this case will TPS53014 function properly ?

Thanks,

Dharaneshwar

  • Hi Dharaneshwar,

    To answer your questions:

1/2. While it is possible to replace the TPS53015 with the TPS53014, I would recommend modifying the layout and BOM slightly in order to provide a soft-start capacitor. The TPS53014 relies on a soft-start capacitor to receive the charge from an internal current source and control the soft-start ramp. Without this in place, I cannot guarantee proper behavior. In terms of package compatibility with similar specifications, the TPS53015 and TPS53014 are two products which provide a good alternative to one another. However, if you are unable to modify the pin 2 output to accommodate a capacitor, please provide your system specifications, and I can see if we may have another product suitable for your application.

    Sincerely,

  • Hi Alec Biesterfeld,

Thanks for your time and reply.

In my design there is no provision for connecting a soft start capacitor for TPS53014. So could you suggest a alternate part for drop in replacement for TPS53015. My specifications are listed below.

    • 19V input (+/-5%), 3.3V Output
      Output Current : 7A
      Operating Temperature : 0C to 50
    • 19V input (+/-5%), 5V Output
      Output Current : 6.5A
      Operating Temperature : 0C to 50C

I have also included a schematics of TPS53015 in my design which needs an alternate part.

    Thanks,

    Dharaneshwar S

  • Unfortunately, in that package size, the two VSSOP package, synchronous buck controllers are the TPS53015 and TPS53014 with a similar pinout, so I do not have a drop-in replacement available. Is there any additional flexibility in your design to accommodate another part?
